Bhelaguri became Asia’s largest tea estate, after it was merged with Kakajan.
Sustained efforts over the years bore a handsome fruit in 2006 when, the tea estate listed its highest produce of tea, producing 13 lakh kilograms. The Bhelaguri Division listed its highest produce in 2012.

The entire estate is divided into two divisions – Bhelaguri & Debrapara. While, Bhelaguri has a cultivation area of 490.51 hectares, Debrapara comprises a total cultivation area of 242.71 hectares. Divided into 91 sections, the tea estate has the capacity to produce 13 lakh kilograms of CTC tea, making it the seventh highest producing estate in the company. The plucking season here, begins February end or in the first week of March, and runs through the rest of the year ending in December, after which the pruning takes place. The peak plucking season is July to October, when a major percentage of the crop is made.
People Welfare Commitments
Bhelaguri has 960 permanent employees who reside in 646 pucca quarters. Additionally, during the peak season, it employs temporary workers primarily for plucking. The estate also employs 13 staff members & 9 artisan staff.
The current population of the estate is 4714. The entire population currently resides in 646 pucca quarters, which spread over the 2 divisions – Bhelaguri & Debrapara. The housing complex is maintained by the estate, free of cost.
Close to the labour colony, the estate has two dispensaries (one in each division), which have six beds each, to look into the medical needs of the inhabitants of the estate. The main hospital is in Kakajan, dedicated to providing medical services. The estate has one Senior Medical Officer and one Welfare Officer to look into the medical treatment as when required. Additionally, the estate has two pharmacists, two ANM’s and one Health Assistant. Preventive immunization for workers as per government protocols are also methodically carried out.
Also, to safeguard their health and hygiene, 646 toilets have been constructed.
For the children, the estate runs two lower primary government schools in addition to the four Anganwadi and eight Survasiksha Centres.
Mahila mandals and other dedicated committees look into facilitating the community’s participation in different affairs, reducing absenteeism & alcoholism, line cleaning and care for pregnant women, and providing support for TB cases, etc. Dedicated women workers from each division look into the matters concerning healthcare and welfare.
There are employee councils in the estate, which help with the daily activities of the estate. They are all share-holders and help discuss & resolve issues pertaining to the estate.
Disaster Relief Programs have been designed to provide the knowledge, tools, and support that the workers need, to plan and implement effective natural calamity mitigation strategies. An Emergency Preparedness Team has been appointed for the same. Also, for the convenience of those residing in the estate, important numbers have been put on display.
The Bhelaguri Tea Estate has endeavoured to keep its commitments towards protecting the environment and contributing in its own way to sustain nature.
All labour quarters at Bhelaguri have the essential provision of electricity, with separate committees looking into the same. The estate has 3 transformers & 2 gensets to meet the regular demands of electricity at the estate. Also, to conserve electricity, the bungalows and factories have switched to CFL’s. The consumption is regularly monitored by committees to keep the usage within limits.
The estate makes Vermicompost from biodegradable scrub jungle and cattle manure. Energy efficient CFL bulbs are used across bungalows and factories within the estate, in order to conserve electricity.
Soil analysis is done on a yearly basis at the R&D department of the tea estate.

A proud moment for one of the permanent workers recently made news! Pakash Tanti, son of worker has been selected for the Indian Army, and this is the first time such an accomplishment has been made.
Siblings belonging to the family of a worker have secured 1st Division in their respective board examinations. Deep Majhi secured 77.33% in his Class 10th Boards; while, his elder sister Junti Majhi scored 60% in her Class 12th.
