As per record, the estate was established in year 1897 by Kanan Devan Hills Produce under James Finlay and Company. In the year 1983 the control of the Estate was taken over by Tata Tea Limited and by Amalgamated Plantations Private Limited in the year 2008.
Kakajan was the company’s first tea estate to adopt the mechanisation of plucking in 2011. Sustained efforts over the years bore a handsome fruit in 2006 when, the tea estate listed its highest produce of tea.

Note of Interest
The estate has got a line called Nagadera, which used to be populated mainly by Naga families. From World War II to Indo-Sino War in 1962, many Naga families temporarily shifted their base to the plains to save themselves. Later on they returned to their native place, save a few families who have been there since 1943.
The Estate is situated beside the historic “Dhodar Ali” which was constructed by the Ahom King Gadadhar Singha in the year 1687. The road has a stretch of 212 kms and starts from Kamargaon in Golaghat and terminates at Joypur, in Dibrugarh. The road had been built to mobilize the Ahom Army from Upper to Upper Middle Assam.
There is also a funny story that has been retrieved from the archives of the estate which throws light on the country’s postal service in the past. A hand-written note from Mr. G. Grimes, the then Assistant Manager of the Kakajan Division and found by Mr. N. Ahmed, a staff member of the estate, says, “In this country a letter takes 30 days to reach its destination of only 7 kms”.
Garden Produce & Production Facility
Kakajan Tea Estate spread across 16.22 sq. kilometres has a cultivation area of over 950.81hectares and a production area that covers 929.89 hectares. The tea estate has the capacity to produce 3.60 lakh kilograms of CTC tea which is the final product that it has to offer. The plucking season here, begins in March, runs through the rest of the year and ends in December.
Fresh green tea leaves from the garden are plucked and processed in the factory which ahs the capacity to produce 12 lakh kilograms of CTC tea and is located within the estate. The produce is manually sorted, individually graded and carefully packed.
People Welfare Commitments
Kakajan Tea Estate has 1691 permanent employees and during the peak season, it employs an additional 980 temporary workers. The estate provides 1045 labour quarters to accommodate its workforce. Electricity supply is provided to all the labour lines and they are under the charge of individual line wise committee.
To safeguard their health and hygiene, scientifically designed drains have been built to remove sewage from the labour lines.
The estate runs one semi equipped hospital and two divisional dispensaries to cater to the healthcare needs of the estate’s residents. Also, there are three childcare centres dedicated to look after their health and well-being. Immunization in accordance with government protocols is strictly followed here and with government aid, frequent health camps are conducted.
The estate has a highly dedicated medical team which is led by Dr. Sarkar who is ably assisted by Dr. L. Das and two competent welfare officers.
The estate has 5 lower primary schools run by the government.
The Estate Employee Council and dedicated link workers look into facilitating the community’s participation in different affairs. In the neighboring villages, the estate organizes various lab to land programs in order to encourage harmonious relationship building among the different residing communities and to uplift the rural poor.
Packed rations are issued to the workers to improve their quality of living. There are women’s groups and clubs for adolescent girls comprising of 36 members. These give the members the scope to interact with each other, discuss their problems and create awareness on various lifestyle issues. The estate also has four labour clubs for the workers to engage in recreational activities.
Lamabari Tea Estate has endeavoured to keep its commitments towards protecting the environment and contributing in its own way to sustain nature.
To conserve electricity, the estate uses two solar powered lights for its fishery ponds.
All chemical and hospital waste materials are disposed on a yearly basis to government certified agencies.
Soil analysis is done on a yearly basis at the R&D section of Teok Tea Estate. Manures applied in the plantation are as per their recommendations.The application of bio fertilizers has been implemented to reduce the application of inorganic fertilizers which cause environmental hazards.
Certifications & Awards
The Estate won the ABITA family welfare award in 2004 & 2009 and has been runners up in 2008 and 2010.
The Estate will go for ISO22000 certification shortly.
The Estate has been awarded by the company in 2011 and 2013 for Best Overall performance in Production and Efficiencies.
