Established in the year 1919, the estate originally belonged to Borellie Tea Co.; and, subsequently, it was taken over by Anglo American Direct Trading Co. Ltd., in 1876, as per the land records available. The estate was, then, founded by the eminent social reformer AB Ray. Thereafter, James Finlay & Company took over the duties of maintaining the estate. In 1983, the establishment came under the acquisition of Tata Tea. And finally, the reins of Nahorani tea estate, was taken over by Amalgamated Plantations Pvt. Ltd. in May 2008.
Sustained efforts over the years bore a handsome fruit in 1983 when, the tea estate listed its highest produce of tea by crossing 100 tonnes – a proud moment for the tea estate.

Garden Produce & Production Facility
Spread across 1200 hectares, Nahorani has a total cultivation & production area of that covers 705.68 hectares. The tea estate has the capacity to produce 2.52 lakh kilograms of CTC tea & 7.13 lakh kilograms of Orthodox tea, which are the final products that the estate has to offer. The plucking season here, begins in March, runs through the rest of the year and ends in December.
Fresh green tea leaves from the garden are plucked and processed in the factory which is located within the estate. The produce is manually sorted and individually graded. While the Orthodox tea undergoes withering, rolling, shifting, fermentation & drying; the CTC tea is withered, fermented and dried. They are then packed separately into PP woven sacks, sealed and marked with hand-rollers using non-porous ink.
People Welfare Commitments
Nahorani has 1468 permanent employees and, 58 staff members on its employee roster. During the peak season, it employs an additional 900 temporary workers with 7 trainees to meet the demands.
The Estate’s worker welfare initiative is one of the prime focus areas of Nahorani. The tea estate works on both the workers health and community development. 915 labour quarters have been provided as well as maintained by the company at Nahorani, to accommodate its workforce. Close to the labour colony, there is a hospital, with the provision of 40 beds, which provides them medical treatment as and when they need it. There are 3 dispensaries in the out division, to look into primary care of the workers, at times of need. The Welfare Team led by a Medical Adviser with two qualified Welfare Officers, along with staff members and workers, work towards safeguarding the health of the residents of the estate.
Preventive immunisation for workers as per government protocols are also methodically carried out.
For the children, the estate runs two primary schools in addition to two crèches for the toddlers. Continued efforts by the teaching staff and other members of these institutions have led to 700 students being enrolled at the school.
Mahila mandals, Sexual Harassment Prevention Committee and other dedicated committees look into facilitating the community’s welfare. These groups help provide the workers and each member residing at the estate, the scope to interact with each other, discuss their problems and create awareness on various lifestyle issues such as Alcoholism, and social issues concerning the well-being of the members.
The Nahorani Tea Estate has endeavoured to keep its commitments towards protecting the environment and contributing in its own way to sustain nature.
There is provision of electricity at all labour quarters. The supply of electricity is overseen by ASEB. In addition, five gensets are provided by the company. The street lights and bungalows at Nahorani make user of solar panelled lights to conserve electrical energy.
Chemical wastes and hospital garbage are disposed as per the SA8000 standards.
Soil analysis is done on a yearly basis at the R&D section of Teok Tea Estate. Manures applied in the plantation are as per their recommendations.
