Rungamuttee Tea Estate, located on the northern side of NH31 at 600 feet above sea level, derives its name from ‘rung’ meaning red and ‘muttee’ meaning soil. In the year 1850, tea cultivation was introduced in Darjeeling and it found its way to Dooars in 1862. This estate dates back to 1866 when tea seeds sourced from Assam were first planted in the Ranikhola division which is also the oldest division of the estate.
Rungamuttee factory was established in 1869 and was predominantly an orthodox estate till 1964. In 1964-65 it shifted to CTC manufacture and over the years has proved itself as a well known auction market. Mr. P.K.Roy was the first Indian Manager of the Estate. The factory has undergone several renovations with the major one taking place in 2001.
It was a proud moment for the estate when it listed its record crop of 2044479 kilograms in 2003.

Note of Interest
The estate community comprises of different ethnic tribes from Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Nepal and Ranchi. At present it is mainly inhabited by the Adivasis and the Nepalis. The RK and SF divisions comprise mostly of the Adivasi population while majority of the Nepalis reside in CB and NSF divisions.
Garden Produce & Production Facility
Rungamuttee, spread across 1427.77 hectares has a tea production area of just under 779.63 hectares. The tea estate has the capacity to produce 16 lakh kilograms of CTC tea which is the final product that it has to offer. The plucking season here, begins in March, runs through the rest of the year and ends in December.
People Welfare Commitments
Rungamuttee has 1991 permanent employees and during the peak season, it employs an additional 700 temporary workers.
The estate has a recently renovated a fifty bedded hospital. It also methodically carries out preventive immunisation of workers as per government protocols.
The estate has four crèches, one each in all the divisions. Satellite crèches are also run in all four divisions under the supervision of 10 CHVs.
To regulate hygiene maintenance within the estate, pucca drains have been built in the labour lines of SF, NSF and RK divisions.
Although there are no schools directly run by Rungamuttee, it has 4 primary schools, 1 junior high school and 2 Shishu Shiksha Kendras, run by the government.
The Estate Employee Council along with Mahila mandals and student’s clubs, look into facilitating the community’s participation in different affairs.
The estate also runs an art and craft centre with the vision to develop self dependency in girls. At present around 80 girls come here to receive training under experienced trainers.
Further, to improve the quality of living of the workers, packed rations are issued to them. The estate has got electrification completed in the labour lines of Ranikhola and Chaibasa divisions. The work is underway in SF and NSF divisions.
Rungamuttee Tea Estate has endeavoured to keep its commitments towards protecting the environment and contributing in its own way to sustain nature. Being located in a drought prone area, the estate in order to maintain the ecological balance in the region, has dug up many ponds in all the divisions.
Workers have been made aware of garbage management through continuous communication and meetings. Pits have been made in labour lines to collect cow dung and other wastes.
Soil analysis is done on a yearly basis at the R&D section of Teok Tea Estate. Manures applied in the plantation are as per their recommendations.The application of bio fertilizers has been implemented to reduce the application of inorganic fertilizers which cause environmental hazards.
